The title traces its roots back to 1597, when legal luminaries were first recognized for being "learned in the law". Historically known as king's or queen's counsel in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong now uses the term "senior counsel" following the 1997 resumption of Chinese sovereignty.

Becoming a senior counsel isn't merely about years of practice - though applicants must have at least 10 years of experience at the Bar. The Chief Justice personally oversees the selection process, evaluating candidates based on their legal ability, professional standing, and comprehensive legal knowledge, as outlined in section 31A of the Legal Practitioners Ordinance.

The most visible symbol of this distinguished status is the silk robe, which dramatically sets these legal professionals apart from their peers during ceremonial events like the Opening of the Legal Year. When senior counsel march in procession with judges, wearing traditional wigs and robes, they represent a living connection to legal traditions that span centuries.
