Winnipeg Mom Saves Toddler and Her Father From Red River

Jayclyn Morrissette was enjoying an evening walk at St. John's Park when she spotted something terrifying: a toddler flailing in the Red River below.

The 32-year-old Winnipeg mom rushed to the water's edge just as the child's father jumped in to save his daughter. Within seconds, Morrissette realized he wasn't coming back up.

She emptied her pockets and dove in. Pulling the man from the water took everything she had, with her neighbor grabbing onto her as she held the father. Together, they hauled him to safety.

Then Morrissette swam back out for the child. The toddler was unconscious, her eyes open and tongue purple. Morrissette placed the lifeless girl on her chest and swam backward toward shore, pumping the child's stomach as she went.

On the riverbank, Morrissette and her neighbor performed CPR using skills she'd learned over a decade ago. They continued compressions and rescue breaths until first responders arrived.

The girl was rushed to hospital in critical condition but was later stabilized. Doctors now expect her to make a full recovery.

Why This Inspires

Morrissette refuses the hero label. "I'm just a mom," she insists, convinced anyone else would have done the same thing.

But her body tells a different story. She suffered neck and shoulder injuries that still require pain medication. For days afterward, nightmares haunted her sleep with images of the child's purple tongue and open eyes.

Winnipeg police called her actions "remarkable courage and selflessness," noting she saved complete strangers with little regard for her own safety. Her split-second decision to jump in twice, first for the father and then for his daughter, gave this family their lives back.

Now recovering at home, Morrissette has one message for other parents: "Watch your kids at all times near water. It only takes a second."

Her humble response to heroism reminds us that the best of humanity often comes from ordinary people doing extraordinary things when it matters most.
