The International Hot Rod Association purchases historic Rockingham Speedway, promising to preserve its legacy while introducing exciting new racing and entertainment experiences. IHRA's strategic acquisition signals a bright future for the beloved motorsports venue.

In a bold move that preserves motorsports history, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has purchased the iconic Rockingham Speedway, signaling a new chapter for the beloved racing venue.

The historic 1.017-mile oval, originally opened in 1965 as North Carolina Motor Speedway, will continue its legacy under IHRA's ownership after a strategic acquisition announced on New Year's Eve 2025.

IHRA owner Darryl Cuttell expressed deep reverence for the track's storied past, stating, "This is a special place with a strong foundation. Our goal is to be good stewards of the facility, respect its history, and work collaboratively to bring quality racing and entertainment back to The Rock."

The purchase comes on the heels of multiple track acquisitions by IHRA, including Heartland Motorsports Park in Kansas, Memphis International Raceway, and Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania. The organization has also expanded its portfolio by acquiring F1 Powerboat Racing and the World Drag Racing Alliance.

Exciting improvements are planned for Rockingham, including facility upgrades, expanded fan amenities, and new entertainment elements like concerts and festival-style experiences. NASCAR's O'Reilly Auto Parts and Craftsman Truck series are already scheduled to race at the track on April 3-4, with an open test planned for January 27-28.

Track leadership is actively engaging respected industry operators like Bob Sargent and Track Enterprises to ensure a smooth transition. The previous owner, Dan Lovenheim, who acquired the 250-acre property in August 2018, had put the speedway up for sale shortly after a sold-out 2025 NASCAR weekend.

As part of its broader strategic vision, IHRA has also launched an eight-race Stock Car Series that will conduct events across the Southeast and Midwest, beginning March 21 at Pulaski Motorsports Park and concluding October 17 at Memphis Motorsports Park.

The acquisition represents more than a business transaction—it's a commitment to preserving motorsports heritage and providing fans with thrilling racing experiences for generations to come.
