In a swift response to a late-night assault on the Ipele-Owo community, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has ordered intensified security patrols across the state's vulnerable regions.

The attack, which occurred around 10 pm on New Year's Eve, saw approximately 20 gunmen storm the agrarian community in a commando-style operation, targeting and burning a local police station.

Speaking after an emergency meeting with security chiefs in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa confirmed that while the attackers breached initial security, their rapid mobilization prevented any loss of life. The governor immediately contacted police and military leadership, directing immediate deployment of additional security personnel to support ongoing patrols.

An eyewitness described the incident as terrifying, recounting how residents were forced to flee into nearby bushes as the attackers fired sporadically throughout the community. The police station was damaged, with the assailants reportedly discharging an explosive, but no casualties were reported.

Ondo State Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal dismissed social media rumors of church attacks or civilian casualties, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing. He stressed that while the incident was serious, it was premature to label it a terrorist attack without further evidence.

The governor's directive includes increased presence of security operatives, including the Joint Operations Task Force and Amotekun Corps, who will patrol both community areas and forested regions. Aiyedatiwa reassured residents that security agencies are committed to preventing such incidents and maintaining the state's reputation as one of the safest in southern Nigeria.

As investigations continue, local authorities remain vigilant, urging residents to stay calm and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate security channels.
