Nigeria Emerges as Fertiliser Powerhouse: 624,103 Tonnes Produced in Record Year
Nigeria produces a record 624,103 tonnes of NPK fertiliser in 2025, establishing itself as sub-Saharan Africa's fertiliser production leader through innovative manufacturing strategies and strategic government initiatives.
In a remarkable demonstration of agricultural innovation, Nigeria has solidified its position as the leading fertiliser production hub in sub-Saharan Africa, generating an impressive 624,103 metric tonnes of NPK fertiliser in 2025.
The groundbreaking achievement comes from data released by the AfricaFertiliser initiative and the International Fertiliser Development Centre, revealing Nigeria's robust agricultural transformation strategy. By the end of 2025, the country boasted over 90 blending plants, marking a significant milestone in domestic fertiliser manufacturing.
The production landscape is particularly dynamic, with fourteen blend types accounting for 98.5% of total output. NPK 20-10-10+S, NPK 20-10-5+S, and NPK 15-15-15+S emerged as the most prominent blends, demonstrating the country's sophisticated fertiliser engineering capabilities.
Regional production was concentrated in key areas, with the North-West and South-West regions dominating, contributing approximately 86% of the total national output. Kano and Kaduna led the North-West region with 184,211 and 179,687 metric tonnes respectively, while Lagos topped the South-West with 141,292 metric tonnes.
The Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), launched under former President Buhari's administration, played a crucial role in this transformation. By encouraging local manufacturing and implementing strategic import restrictions, Nigeria significantly reduced its dependency on imported fertilisers, fostering a more self-reliant agricultural ecosystem.
The report also highlighted the industry's adaptability, noting that despite global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine crisis, imported raw material volumes and apparent consumption continued to increase. The introduction of Granular Ammonium Sulphate (GAS) in 2021 further revolutionized blending dynamics, with non-traditional blends increasingly dominating production.
Complementing NPK production, Nigeria also produces granulated Urea through strategic manufacturers like Notore Chemical Industries, Indorama Fertilisers & Chemicals, and Dangote Fertiliser Limited. This comprehensive approach underscores Nigeria's commitment to agricultural innovation and food security.
