Kano's Bold Agriculture Revolution: 5.5 Million Livestock to Be Vaccinated
Kano State's innovative agricultural project is revolutionizing livestock production and farmer support through comprehensive vaccination, mechanization, and market infrastructure development.
In a groundbreaking agricultural transformation, Kano State is setting a national benchmark for livestock development and farmer empowerment.
The Kano State Agro-pastoral Development Project (KSADP) has already vaccinated over 4.5 million livestock in just three years, with an ambitious target of reaching 5.5 million animals. Project coordinator Ibrahim Garba Muhammad boldly stated, "I don't think there is any state in this country that is proud of vaccinating up to 2 million livestock in three years, but Kano has done that and so many other things."
The project, financed by the Islamic Development Bank with a $95 million investment, extends far beyond vaccination. KSADP has strategically developed 2,000 hectares of grazing land at the Danshosiya reserve and prepared an additional 1,000 hectares across 20 areas for private fodder production.
Market infrastructure has also seen significant upgrades. The KofarWambai Fura da Nono market now features a cold storage room benefiting over 3,000 members, while 98 milk collection centers have been constructed, with 40 fully equipped with cold storage facilities. When fully operational, these centers could potentially produce 15 million liters of milk annually.
Mechanization has been another critical focus. The project established three large-scale agricultural mechanization centers across Kano's senatorial zones, providing farmers with 98 tractors and 48 combined harvesters. This initiative has dramatically improved agricultural productivity, with crop yields increasing from 1.5 metric tons to 4.5 metric tons per hectare.
The economic impact has been remarkable. Aggregated produce sales have reached N39.2 billion in less than five years, with an average income increase of N972,462 per farmer. Twenty-two aggregation centers have been established across local government areas to encourage collective marketing and provide enhanced business services.
By integrating technology, training, and infrastructure development, KSADP is not just improving agricultural output but fundamentally transforming rural economic opportunities in Kano State.
