As unforgiving winter rains cascade across Gaza, humanitarian teams are mounting an urgent, coordinated response to protect vulnerable populations from severe weather challenges and ongoing displacement.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported Monday that seasonal downpours are dramatically worsening conditions for residents, causing war-damaged buildings to collapse and flooding makeshift shelters. Heavy rainstorms are soaking personal belongings and increasing health risks, particularly for infants and displaced families.

In a remarkable display of resilience, UN agencies and non-governmental organizations are rapidly deploying critical resources. Teams are distributing essential supplies including tents, tarpaulins, warm clothing, blankets, and dignity kits to help residents survive the harsh conditions. Additionally, specialized teams are mobilizing heavy equipment to pump dangerous, overflowing sewage away from residential areas to prevent potential disease outbreaks.

Between December 23-26, humanitarian partners made significant progress in supporting Gaza's population. Water, sanitation, and hygiene teams distributed tens of thousands of hygiene kits and personal care items, reaching approximately 150,000 individuals in urgent need. Food security efforts have been equally impressive, with over one million people - roughly half of Gaza's population - receiving monthly food assistance through 60 distribution points.

Supporting local agricultural sustainability, humanitarian partners also distributed veterinary kits and animal feed to more than 2,000 families with livestock between December 9-26. This strategic intervention helps maintain local production capabilities and reduces long-term aid dependency.

Despite ongoing challenges, including military operations forcing residents from neighborhoods like At Tufah and difficult access to basic services in areas like As Sanafour, humanitarian teams remain committed to providing comprehensive support and preserving human dignity during these extraordinarily difficult times.
